DIA DE REYES MAGOS

One of our favorite holidays is El Día de Los Reyes, and for good reason! It’s a day devoted to family, rich in tradition and a time when we get to enjoy a delicious Rosca de Reyes. However, not many people know the history and symbolism behind this cake. Why is it round? Why do we hide a small baby figurine inside? Let’s explore together!

Where does this dessert come from? The origins of the Rosca date back to medieval Europe, specifically France. Cakes were baked with a small bean hidden inside, and whoever found the bean would be crowned “King” for the holiday. As Catholicism adopted the tradition, the bean was replaced with a small porcelain figurine of baby Jesus. Hiding the figurine in the cake symbolizes Mary and Joseph hiding their baby from King Herod’s persecution.

The shape of the Rosca is also symbolic, resembling a crown and representing eternal, never-ending love. The colorful quince, nopales, and cherries on top represent the jewels of the crown, while the color green symbolizes faith and gold represents power.

 CELEBRATE WITH YOUR FAMILY

What happens when you find the little plastic baby in your slice? Congratulations! You are now the honorary compadre or comadre (godparent) of baby Jesus. Not only are you tasked with caring for the baby until February 2nd (Candlemas), but you are also responsible for hosting the Candlemas celebration. This gathering often includes tamales and atole (a traditional hot drink like Cafe de Olla or Hot Mexican Chocolate), reinforcing the themes of family, community, and tradition during this festive time.
