...ruins the insulating effects of the forest in winter. Monarch butterflies depend on the oyamel fir forests of Michoacán, México as their overwintering sites in order to survive another year. Communities in the region living off the forest unknowingly contribute to the deforestation, needing firewood for their homes. Worse, the smoke from these firewood stoves contribute to lung disease that disproportionately affect indigenous communities. 

Fortunately, Ecolife Conservation has a solution – providing local communities with well-insulated stoves that use at least 50% less firewood. These are called Patsari Stoves, meaning "caretaker" in Purépecha. The Patsari "eliminates 90% of smoke from homes, the flat surfaces are ideal for cooking tortillas and traditional meals, and the brick exteriors make them permanent and safe for children" (ecolifeconservation.org).
