HISTORY OF CHAMPURRADO & MOLINILLOS

HISTORY OF CHAMPURRADO & MOLINILLOS

 WHAT IS CHAMPURRADO?

champurrado

Champurrado is the quintessential drink of the holidays in Mexico. The warm, chocolatey taste is reminiscent of hot cocoa and the flour in the drink thickens it, making it much more filling than a regular hot chocolate. Its roots are thousands of years old, with many different variations today. There’s no question why we love champurrado so much, the scientific name for cocoa, Theobroma, literally meaning “food of the gods”.

HOW DO YOU MAKE CHAMPURRADO?

La Monarca's Champurrado makes it incredibly easy to enjoy at home! All you need is 1 tablespoon per cup of simmered milk, and blend! Blending is important as it emulsifies the mix and allows the flour to expand, giving champurrado its distinctive body. This can be done with your standard commercial blender or a molinillo!

WHAT IS A MOLINILLO?

A molinillo is essentially a hand-powered blender or whisk with roots as old as chocolate. Variations of molinillos have existed for thousands of years, from three-pronged cacao branches to the highly decorative ones we see today! The modern molinillos were invented in the 1700s, specifically to mix and froth chocolate. If you don’t already have one, we have them available as a set!
